Old Bodybuilding Art Project Still To Finish

I think I began this piece early last year but my busy schedual kept me from finishing it. I'll start back on it again as soon as I get time.

THE PROJECT:
The client required 'two' large A2 size pencil drawings based on past photographs of himself. The client is a former competitive bodybuilder.

John Coltrane Art

I meant to post this up yesterday. I began painting my John Coltrane piece. If you don't know who John Coltrane is click here!

Here is the first stage of my painting.

By first stage I mean this is the stage I stopped at after my first day. Once I type this up I'll begin again and post up a photo of how the painting looks after further development.

Yesterday I began work on a large canvas painting which measures 50cm X 70cm (19.7" X 27.6") - Portrait.

The painting is a design based on music legend Louis Armstrong.

I'm using oil paints to complete the piece. Initially I sketched out the design using pencil. Yesterday afternoon I went hunting for art materials which took up abit of my time. I began painting yesterday but only really spent a couple of hours working away and some of that time was spent playing about with my digital camera. I've never used a camcorder to record myself creating artwork before so I'm finding it difficult to setup the camcorder in a position where viewers can get a good look of my work without me popping into the footage lol!

Anyway here is the first stage of my work.

Excuse the bad quality photo but I took the photo at night when the light wasn't great. If I get time I plan to replace the picture with a better photo later today. As you can see not much has been done. Doesn't look too good just now. Within a couple of days I should have alot more done.

The downside with using oils is the extremely long drying process. Makes it tricky painting areas when other areas are still wet.

I'm also experimenting using 'Winsor & Newton' Oil Colour 'Liquin Original'. It's a substance that is suppposed to improve the flow of oil paints when applied to canvas. Beforehand I noticed the oil paints were really dry when applying them to the canvas (very frustrating) so yesterday I went out looking for materials that would help make my oil paints flow better on canvas and I discovered Liquin Original.

My only problem so far is that it washes down the oils too much turning the oils into more of a water colour wash. But then again I haven't used this type of substance before so I suppose it will just take practice.

Later today I'll start fresh and do my best to get as much paint to the canvas as I possibly can. I will be completing two canvas pieces at once. I usually do this when working in oils. Makes sense.

Within this topic expect to find stage by stage photos of this painting from start to finish. Once I finish the painting I'll edit and upload my video which will show me painting the whole piece from start to finish. Should be pretty cool, hopefully!
